You don’t need to sign up for any scheme to claim the discount
Pret customers can claim half-price drinks at the popular coffee chain and eatery. Any customer can access the discount and there’s no need to sign up for anything to claim your bargain brew at the counter.
You pick from a range of hot drinks from Pret, such as an americano, a flat white or a tea. However, the group has one particularly affordable option available at many of its outlets; its filter coffee, which is available at many branches for just 99p. The price is the same without or without milk. However, one discount you can get at any Pret branch is 50p off any drink, if you bring a reusable cup for your drink.
So if you go for a 99p filter coffee and hand over your reusable cup, you will be rewarded for you eco-conscious gesture with effectively a half-price discount, as you’ll pay just 49p for the drink. Some branches sell the filter coffee for £1.20, so you can get this for 70p if you hand the barista your reusable cup.

The Pret website features this description for its filter coffee: “Pret’s signature organic filter coffee is a hand-crafted blend of arabica coffees from Peru, Honduras, Ethiopia and Sumatra. Medium roasted to create a smooth and balanced filter coffee.
“Served as a 12oz drink. All our barista-prepared drinks are also available decaffeinated. Both skimmed and semi-skimmed milks are available, as well as milk alternatives.”
Other discounts
Many other of the big coffee chains will offer you a discount for bringing a reusable cup. Starbucks will give you a 25p discount, plus it charges 5p for a paper cup for your drink. Costa Coffee will give you an extra bean on the loyalty app towards your next free drink, and Caffè Nero will give you an extra stamp towards your next free drink.
You can also get 25p off your drink at Greggs with a reusable cup and 50p off at M&S Café. You can get an even more impressive discount at Pure, where you get £1 off any hot drink. Information on the chain’s website suggests many people are taking up this offer.
The group says: “We offer a £1 reusable cup discount on all hot drinks, and if you don’t have a cup, you can buy one of our reusable cups in any store. Almost 20 percent of coffees sold at Pure are now served in a reusable cup and all our team members have their own cup, helping us to save 350,000 single-use cups a year.”
Many independent cafés also provide similar discounts, so it may be worth asking what the policy is wherever your favourite spot is for a hot drink. Another way to look at this, if you are a regular at a particular coffee house, is you could needlessly be paying up to £1 extra for your drink. So it may be worth searching out your reusable cup if you have one in the cupboard at home, or investing in a new one, to keep in your bag when you go out.
