While many people have always aspired to tie the knot and get on the property ladder, many twenty-somethings have revealed their priorities have changed, and they’d rather spend their money on more exciting adventures

While many aspire to get onto the property ladder or tie the knot, a new study has found Gen Z’s priorities have changed and instead are spending their money on something else.

It’s no secret buying a house at the moment is feeling extremely unobtainable thanks to the current economy, and it appears it’s changed people’s plans for the future. People no longer have aspirations to buy a house and settle down before they’re 30 – and it’s been found that these traditional milestones are losing traction with Gen Z. Putting their hard-earned money into holidays instead is becoming more appealing- as it was found the hefty costs of long-haul trips is the only thing stopping them from jetting off.

A study by First Choice found that young Brits feel “anxious” about turning 30 (27%), and a third (31%) feel they should have had more exciting life experiences, hence why more and more people would prefer to go on holidays and make memories rather than settling down.

Ahead of turning 30, the research found that nearly half (44%) of those surveyed are determined to take a big trip before their 30th birthday and want to push themselves out of their comfort zone. It comes after half of those asked had only been to five countries or less (58%) which could be why so many are keen to jet off rather than buy houses and get engaged.

Topping the list of the most desired destinations include Thailand, Barbados and Mexico, making the most of the nightlife, culture and nature. While the cost of these trips is the main reason young Brits aren’t going, and in light of the research by First Choice, the holiday site is now aiming to help 20-somethings make their dream trips more of a reality.

“We very much get the pressure that comes with approaching 30,” said the managing director of First Choice, Bart Quinton Smith. “In fact, like many of our customers, the First Choice brand is a 90s baby and in September 2024 we hit the milestone birthday ourselves. Loads of our customers grew up with us, going on their family resort holidays to a Splashworld in the 00s and their first boozy trip to Kos or Malaga with us in their late teens.

“Now we’re all approaching a new era and we want to be with them for the next phase of their travel dreams,” and in turn, the company is offering £250 off long-haul destinations that rank in the top 10. The offer stands for all trips departing between 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2025, with a minimum spend of £2,000.
