Some closures have already happened, with the majority taking place over the next two years
Three major banks across the UK are preparing to shut a combined 168 branches over the coming two years. Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, all operating under the Lloyds Banking Group umbrella, will be impacted.
The closures are scheduled for 2026 and 2027. This follows the group’s announcement of 95 further closures on February 11.
Whilst some locations have already shut their doors this year, the bulk of closures are still to come. According to Money Saving Expert (MSE), these encompass:
- Lloyds – 94 branches closed or closing (including 53 announced on the 11th)
- Halifax – 46 branches closing (including 31 announced on the 11th)
- Bank of Scotland – 28 branches closing (including 11 announced on the 11th)
In response to the announcement, MSE, the website established by finance expert Martin Lewis, outlined several alternative methods for conducting face-to-face banking with Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland.
Other group branches
MSE said: “Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers can use branches across any of the three banks for everyday banking, such as making cash deposits, withdrawals and paying in cheques.” However, you should be aware that this branch could end up closing too.
Banking hubs
These are shared spaces run by the Post Office – but separate to actual Post Offices – where customers of multiple banks can deposit and withdraw cash, get face-to-face support and manage their accounts. MSE said: “As of Wednesday, 11 February, there are 214 hubs up and running around the UK, with 58 additional hubs recommended.”
You can use the Cash Access website, as well as the Post Office’s branch finder (if there is one, it’ll show up in the list with a “banking hub” label) to check if there’s a hub near you.
Community bankers
MSE added: “Check if a Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland ‘community banker’ is visiting your area. Community bankers will have a dedicated office space in a local venue. You can chat to them in private and they can offer support with account enquiries, but they don’t offer cash or counter services.” You can check if a community banker is visiting your area and whether you’ll need to book an appointment on the Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland websites.
Post Office
You can still withdraw cash and make deposits into your bank account at the Post Office. For more information, visit the MSE website here.
