Making sure your radiators are working at full capacity in December is crucial, and there is one easy job you can do to ensure you stay warm as the cold weather continues
With the chill creeping in, it’s vital to ensure your radiators are blasting out heat efficiently, especially since a poorly heated abode can harm your health and send energy bills soaring. John Lawless from Best Heating advises that lacklustre radiator warmth often has an easy fix that doesn’t require calling in the pros.
He explained: “Keeping radiators clean may seem like an obvious way to ensure they operate properly, but many people overlook the different components of a radiator and where to clean to guarantee good performance.” We’re not just talking about the surface of the radiator or the bit you and your visitors can see we’re talking about in-between panels and even INSIDE the radiator itself.” It turns out that everyday dust, fluff and crud could be the culprits jamming up your radiator and sapping its heat output, causing you to crank up the energy use and cost.
Keeping your radiator in tip-top shape takes more than wiping down the surface; it’s about reaching those hidden crannies which might seem challenging but fret not, as there is an easy-peasy solution that takes no time at all. John added: “There are a few tricks you can use to get this dust out from between the fins of the radiator, but our personal favourite is the hairdryer hack.”
Firstly, lay an old sheet, towel, or blanket under the radiator to catch any dust that’s expelled, saving you from vacuuming later. Next, aim the nozzle of your hair dryer down the back of the radiator, in the gap between the appliance and the wall. Turn on the hair dryer, set it to the highest setting, and it should blast out any dust that’s accumulated inside the radiator.
Afterwards, simply gather up your towel, sheet or blanket and give it a good shake outside to avoid any indoor mess. Your radiator should then be more efficient at heating your home. Dirty radiators are often the main reason they’re inefficient, but if cleaning doesn’t help, consider bleeding your radiator to remove any excess water.
Also, make sure your sofa, curtains or other items aren’t obstructing your radiator, as this can also affect its performance. Taking a few moments to carry out these tasks can ensure you stay snug in your home during the chilly, stormy weather at this time of year.
