A shopper claimed to have spotted the frog-shaped snack for £1 at WHSmith in Carlisle, Cumbria – a 900 per cent increase from the original 10p cost – and shared a photo online

Freddo chocolate bars once cost just 10p – but that time has well and truly gone.

The frog-shaped snack was introduced by Cadbury’s in the 1990s and it was initially sold for only 10p, but since 2007 the price has seen a number of hikes. Retailers sell the bars at different prices – and back in 2022, the average cost was 30p.

However, now a shopper spotted the snacks being sold for £1 – a 900 per cent increase from the original 10p cost. Sharing a photo of the 18g bar on sale for the huge sum, a person wrote on Reddit: “£1 for a Freddo is disgusting. Daylight robbery at its finest!”

The user claimed to have spotted the pricey snack at WHSmith in Carlisle, Cumbria. Another person commented: “These used to be 10 pence.” The user replied: “Indeed they were, 10p …. not £1! Absolute b——s.”

At the time of writing, Sainsbury’s is selling a single chocolate bar for 40p – or £1.40 for a multipack of five. At Tesco, the same bar costs 30p and the multipack also costs £1.40. Asda sells a single bar for 34p – and five for £1.32 with a promotion.

Last year, a man who received 120 Freddo bars as a gift following the diagnosis of a medical condition revealed he had been forced to give them up – because of the condition itself. Lumbered with two boxes of the famous Cadbury treat, the man appealed for suggestions on what to do with them to avoid food waste.

Taking to Reddit’s CasualUK subreddit, the receiver of the kind gesture penned: “Got given 120 Freddos by sweet friends following diagnosis of a medical condition. Can’t eat them because of that medical condition. Suggestions please.”

The man was soon met with a series of hilarious ideas, with one Reddit user advising: “Grate them into a bath. Fill bath with goats milk. Bathe in the chocolaty ooze. Regain lost youth. Take over Egypt.”

Another joked: “At the rate the price is increasing you’ll be a millionaire this time next week. Hold on to them, before long they will be 50p.” A third recommended: “Melt them all down and make a giant Freddo. Then raise money for charity by asking people to guess the weight.”

The Mirror has contacted WHSmith for comment.
