Camberwick Green was a favourite TV show for a generation of children based around rural village Wivelsfield Green, in East Sussex, but now there are fears that it is being overdeveloped

The tranquil village that inspired children’s TV show Camberwick Green is at risk of being ruined by over-development, residents claim.

Housing developer Taylor Wimpey wants to build 150 homes on land south of Green Road in Wivelsfield Green, East Sussex. There are already 141 being built in the village and campaigners say the primary school is oversubscribed, GPs are at capacity and traffic is up 980% in a decade.

Richard Morris loves living in the village that inspired Gordon Murray’s animated depiction of rural life, featuring characters such as Windy Miller and Dr Mopp.

He said: “We’re fed up with the amount of development in the village and around the area, enough is enough.” But Labour MP Helena Dollimore said the government was committed to building 1.5 million homes. She added: “We are going to build the homes our community needs in a way that delivers the right public services and infrastructure, and protects the environment.”

Taylor Wimpey said its proposal was well received, adding that 70% of the 52-acre site would be a green community space. Its application is with Lewes District Council. Stop-motion animation Camberwick Green first aired on the BBC in 1966, spawning spin-offs Trumpton and Chigley.
