Police have arrested John Moore, 38, on suspicion of murder following the death of grandfather Francis Reilly, 63, in an incident in Brentwood, Essex, at the weekend

The family of a “greatly loved” grandfather who died after an assault in Essex over the weekend have paid tribute to him.

Essex Police was called to reports of a serious assault shortly after 3.30pm on September 12. Francis Reilly, 63, was pronounced dead at the scene in Brentwood, Essex, and a murder investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, his family said: “Frankie was a loving father, brother, grandfather and uncle. He was greatly loved by his whole family and will be sadly missed. We would ask for privacy at this time so we can continue to grieve as a family.”

John Moore, 38, of Ingrave Road, Brentwood, has been charged with Mr Reilly’s murder. He appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until his next hearing at the same court on November 26.

Detective Inspector Lisa Hurrell said: “Our work is continuing today and officers will also continue to provide a visible presence and reassurance within the community. We urge members of the public to speak to officers if they have any concerns.

“Whenever an incident of this nature occurs, no matter how rare they are, there is very understandable concern. We responded very quickly to what we understand to have been an isolated incident of violence and we are confident there is no ongoing threat to the wider community in Brentwood.”
