Yellow thunderstorm warnings are in place across much of the UK today with many Brits already experiencing thumping hail, overflowing drains and rising water levels

Vast swathes of the UK will brace for heavy shower and thunderstorms today with yellow weather warnings issues across much of the country.

Thunderstorms are set to cast a gloomy picture for Brits in Wales, the South West of England and the Midlands today with rain set to batter the regions for much of the day. The Met Office issued a yellow thunderstorm warning at 1am today and it is active until midnight.

As much as 70mm of rainfall has been predicted to fall across affected regions today with 80mm set to fall tomorrow, according to the Met Office.

Brits have already been battered by thick hail with images of rising water levels and drains overflowing being shared across social media. Residents in Bishop Cleeve Gloucestershire were among those worst affected with clips showing hailstones hammering down outside a house in the village.

But while many people might experience thunderstorms, there is a more varied picture emerging across the rest of the UK. It will be dry in the north with sunny spells in the northwest.

“Not everywhere will see a thunderstorm, it’s the hit-and-miss nature of thunderstorms,” said Met Office meteorologist Amy Bokota. “One place could see torrential downpours, hail, gusty winds, and just down the road, it could be a fine and sunny day.”

She later continued: “We start to get a second system rising from the south as we head into towards the early hours of Sunday. There is a warning in force for this area of rain as well. There is a warning in force for this area of rain as well.

“This is one is slightly different from the one of Saturday. This is a rain warning as opposed to a thunderstorm and we’ll be seeing more widespread cloud and more places will see rainfall as well.”

The yellow rain warning will be in place in the regions previously affected by thunderstorms from midnight on Sunday and will continue into midnight on Monday. A second yellow rain warning shifts eastward with much of Yorkshire, East Anglia and much of England with exception of the South West, the North West, Cumbria and the North East.

Temperatures today will be varied across the UK with highs of 23C being recorded in London and the mercury tipping over 20C in the South East, East Anglia, Yorkshire and the North West. A similar picture will be emerge over the course of Sunday with temperatures hovering in the high teens in much of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Met Office’s report for Sunday said: “Heavy outbreaks of rain moving northwards through the morning across southern England and much of Wales, turning thundery at times. Drier in the north with sunnier spells in the west.”
