NatWest Group which operates NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank has added nine more branch closures to the hundreds already shut
NatWest Group has announced nine more branches will close their doors permanently – but it has pledged these will be the last before 2029. The closures will be added to hundreds of banks which have already shut their doors along with others previously announced.
The banking giant runs NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank and it revealed the closures in a statement affecting all customers on Friday. Making the announcement, it said this was the end of its current programme of network changes and the beginning of “fresh long-term investment in its UK presence and dedication to face-to-face banking”.
Solange Chamberlain, CEO, Retail Banking, NatWest Group said: “This is an important moment for our customers and the communities we serve. We are investing to offer customers a seamless mix of ways to bank with us, including over the phone, digitally, or via our free to use ATM network – while continuing to support those who prefer face-to-face banking in branches and community banking hubs.
“We will not announce any further branch closures until at least 2029 and are expanding more flexible and accessible ways to bank, with enhanced support to help customers act with confidence and achieve their financial goals. We understand the impact these changes can have for our colleagues and customers, and we will engage personally with all those affected by today’s closure announcement.”
NatWest said it is extending beyond conventional branches, delivering face-to-face banking in more adaptable and accessible formats. It said its mobile branch network now serves 577 communities throughout the UK every week, with teams covering 14,000 miles across the country and serving more than 144,000 customers in 2025.
It said it had “reinvented community banking” through flexible, contemporary formats including pop-up locations in retail parks, shopping centres and at university events. It added that Community Bankers in hubs offer “localised, in-person assistance wherever customers require it most with these services specifically designed to guarantee continued access to banking, particularly in rural, remote and underserved areas.
