There were lots of memorable moments in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas finale that had viewers reminiscing on previous show highlights
The Gavin and Stacey Christmas finale has everybody talking – but even the show’s biggest fans might have missed some of the best moments.
The heartwarming BBC sitcom came to an end last night with more than 12 million Brits tuning in to watch Smithy, Nessa and Uncle Bryn on their screens. Writers James Corden and Ruth Jones, who also starred in the series, tied up all the loose ends of the show with some shocking romances and unexpected splits.
If you watched carefully enough, you might have noticed Nessa’s memorable Tic-Tacs line and Smithy’s second foam party ending. Here, the Mirror takes a look at all of the hidden gems in the very last episode of the iconic show…
Beer map
In the final episode, Smithy and Gavin remember the moment they first met Stacey and Nessa when they rediscover their map of beers of the world while clearing a room out for Neil. In the first-ever episode, the pair pledged to taste every beer around the world in 12 months while on the train travelling to London. But sadly, in the final, Smithy pretends it’s nothing important.
Surprise stripper
To celebrate Sonia’s hen do, the women decide to hire a surprise stripper, which the bride isn’t too happy about. It’s of stark contrast to Stacey, in the first series of the show, who has a very different reaction to the surprise stripper at her own hen do.
Corn-on-the-cob
One brilliant moment saw Smithy and Nessa remember a steamy moment from series two episode three. As Gavin, Stacey, Smithy and Nessa stop at KFC to enjoy a family bucket, Gavin asks them both if they want a corn on the cob. They lock eyes, remembering the time they seductively shared a corn on the cob together, and both decide to exit the car, with Smithy repeating the lines from last time.
Foam party
Smithy’s stag do sees the stags visit significant places of his life, with lots of references to previous episodes. Just like in series two, when Gavin and Stacey’s marriage was on the rocks, the night ends with a foam party. But this time, Smithy is far less happy to be in the bubbles as he appears disappointed by all of the young teenagers in the club and his friends leaving early.
Welsh signs
At the end of the finale, Smithy leaves Sonia at the altar to chase down Nessa. It feels like history repeating itself as he races to the docks to find her before she leaves on her ship – just likes in series two when he raced to get to her before she gave birth to Neil the Baby. On the port in the final episode, he admits he can’t understand any of the Welsh signs. And it’s just like when he arrived at the hospital with Gavin and cried that all the signs were in ‘bloody Welsh’.
Tic Tacs
Ahead of Smithy’s pre-stag celebrations, Nessa makes reference to the very first episode of Gavin and Stacey when she commented on Tic Tacs. Revealing everything she’d packed to stay at Pam and Mick’s, Nessa lists her HRT medication, feminine wipes and of course, her trusty Tic Tacs, instead of a toothbrush.
