The energy supplier has issued a new deadline for its millions of customers to take their meter readings – warning they could face unexpected bills if they forget

Brits are being urged to take their meter readings by a particular date if they want to avoid facing unexpected bills.

British Gas, the UK’s leading energy supplier, serves millions of households and businesses across the country. But the energy giant has issued a new deadline for customers to take their meter readings, warning if they don’t submit it on or before October 14, it could mean their next bill is estimated.

Customers should also note that it’s better to take the reading around the October 1 price cap change. This is so you can minimise the risk of being charged a higher rate of energy for your usage before the price cap change. The new energy price cap will be roughly 10% higher than the current cap, which was set in July.

The cap ensures prices for those on a standard variable tariff reflect the cost of energy. It changes every three months – with the cap having fallen to its lowest level in two years in June 2024, from £1,690 to today’s rate of £1,568.

From October 1, Ofgem, who sets the limit, say bills are set to increase from £1,568 to £1,717. Households will have just under three weeks (until October 14) to submit their readings from the first day of the month. This means they must remember to take the reading on October 1. These can then be submitted through their online account, the British Gas mobile app, or an automated line.

British Gas will be providing support to households concerned about the new price cap through their Families and Individual Support Fund. It’s open to both British Gas customers and non customers who are facing debts when it comes to energy bills.

More than £140 million has been set aside for the fund, but there are certain eligibility requirements. Those with a prepayment meter must be within £50 and £1,700 of energy debt. They must also live in England, Scotland or Wales, and not have been a recipient of a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust in the last 2 years.

British Gas can offer those who are eligible:

  • Funding for small businesses and charities

Several other energy providers are offering support, including Scottish power, Utilita, EDF, E.ON and Utility Warehouse. It’s reccommended to contact your provider to find out what help is available, should you need it.
