The move will cut the burden on households to disclose their circumstances to multiple organisations across the two sectors
Energy and water companies are set to collaborate by sharing information about vulnerable customers registered on the Priority Services Register (PSR) to speed up assistance.
The watchdogs Ofgem and Ofwat announced this plan, which aims to reduce the need for households to repeat their circumstances to several organisations within these industries. This new approach promises that the most vulnerable UK households will have access to vital support from energy suppliers, water providers and network operators.
The support includes getting priority aid during crises and being notified in advance about planned supply interruptions, even if only one provider has the required details about the customer’s situation. To date, all distribution network operators and water firms have updated systems to start sharing data, with eight major energy suppliers covering 85% of consumers also on board with the changes.
Ofgem boss Jonathan Brearley commented: “The data sharing progress we have seen in the energy and water sectors demonstrates what is possible, but we know more can be done. We need a ‘tell us once’ model that operates across multiple sectors, so people are supported holistically.”
“We’ll continue to work closely with government, consumer groups and charities, and industry to make sure we are there for vulnerable consumers, this winter and beyond.”
David Black, the chief executive of Ofwat, stated: “The challenges posed by the cost-of-living crisis are not going away, and every effort is required to make sure those who need extra help are given the support they need.”
