Philips Barista Brew Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine

Was £529.99, now £481.99 from Amazon

Beauty and wellness editor – and former barista – Laura Mulley says: “This impressive piece of kit is favourite to date; it looks great in your kitchen, and comes with professional-looking accessories. It’s easy to set up – although if you’re totally new to using these types of coffee machines, as I was, I would recommend thoroughly reading the instructions and watching a few videos first.

“The steamer is especially good – it froths milk just as well as in a café – and the water tank is also really big, so doesn’t need refilling very often.

“The americanos and cappuccinos it produced were honestly as good as professional ones, and I’ve truly stopped nipping out on a Friday morning and spending £5+ on take-out coffee now.”

De’Longhi Rivelia Bean to Cup Coffee Machine

Was £749.99, now £649.99 from De’Longhi

Laura says: “For the amount of tech and functions it has, this smart machine is surprisingly compact and takes up remarkably little room on the kitchen counter, and it’s also incredibly easy to set up.

“It makes a huge range of coffee-based drinks, from lattes and cappuccinos to espressos and cortados – and even iced drinks – simply by selecting the right button. Other cool features include a self-cleaning function of the milk spout, prompts when it’s time to clean or refill it, and user profiles. Additionally, the grinding and frothing is a lot quieter than some machines I’ve tried, and I also like how easy it is to change the hoppers – ideal if you want to switch between types of beans. I’d give the drinks a solid 9/10.”

Nespresso Vertuo Next Automatic Pod coffee machine

Was £149, now £69 from Amazon

Laura says: “If you’re a coffee connoisseur, you’ll love the brews that the Vertuo makes; they are, in my opinion, far superior to the original Pixie machine and, depending on the variety you buy, really do taste like café-made coffee. It’s also handy to just have one button to press instead of selecting your size, and the machine slides the used pod back into the empties bucket in a very slick and satisfying way.

“The biggest downside to the Vertuo machines is that you can only use Vertuo pods, which are currently only available through Nespresso. However, it makes the best-tasting coffee out of any pod machines I’ve tried.”

Breville Barista Max Espresso Machine

Was £461.99, now £373.56 from Amazon

Commerce Content Editor Harriet Morphy-Morris says: “After pressing one of two coffee buttons, a single or double shot, the Barista Max steams the water instantly and filters the grounded coffee into your cup below. I was surprised at how quick this was, a much more efficient way than the old drips-style percolators.

“A lot of the time when I test out products I like to be clear of their downfalls, to be completely honest I’ve not had any myself. I’ve been really impressed with the machine, how easy it is to use, the taste and even the cleaning and de-scaling of it.”
