It can provide extra support for older people including help with council tax, NHS dental treatment and heating bills

Nearly one million people are missing out on a major benefit they’re eligible for, which could provide a host of extra perks, including a free TV licence. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit is currently unclaimed by 910,000 families who are entitled to it, according to recent DWP data.

On average, couples can receive up to £346.69 per week if they are eligible for Pension Credit. To qualify for Guarantee Pension Credit, you must have reached State Pension age (66) and your weekly income must be less than the minimum amount the UK Government deems necessary for living.

If you’re a carer, disabled, or have specific housing costs, you might qualify for more than the standard amount. Savings Credit can provide up to a certain sum, with the exact amount depending on your income and savings, including assumed income from savings and capital over £10,000.

If you make a successful claim for Pension Credit, you could get a wide variety of extra help.

Extra perks with Pension Credit

People who make a successful claim for Pension Credit could also be eligible for a wide variety of extra perks. This can include:

  • A free TV licence (If you’re aged 75 or over)
  • Discount on council tax worth up to 100% of the bill
  • Free NHS dental treatment
  • Help with costs of glasses and transport to hospital
  • Housing Benefit to help pay for the rent for your home
  • Help with mortgage interest and service charges
  • Eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment
  • Eligible for a Cold Weather Payment when temperatures drop significantly

How to apply for Pension Credit

You can begin applying for Pension Credit within the four months leading up to your State Pension age and at any time afterwards – in this scenario, your claim could be backdated by up to three months. You will also need the following information readily available before starting the application process:

  • Information regarding income, savings, and investments you may have as well as this information dating back to up to three months if you’re backdating the claim.
  • Your National Insurance Number
  • Your bank details

You can apply online via GOV.UK here. Alternatively, you can apply by post by printing out and completing the Pension Credit claim form and sending it to the DWP Pension Service or call the claim line to request a form.
