The DVLA confirms the online method is the quickest

Elderly drivers are being warned to act now or face potential penalties, as the DVLA issues a fresh alert to anyone nearing their 70th birthday.

In a “do it” message posted online, the agency emphasised that motorists must renew their licence upon reaching the landmark age – and then every three years thereafter. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency said: “If you’re 70 or over, you need to renew your driving licence every 3 years. Do it online – you’ll get your new licence within a week!”

Understanding the regulations

Anyone aged 70 or above – or who will reach 70 within the next 90 days – can renew their licence online at no cost.

Motorists must satisfy key criteria, including:

  • Being a Great Britain resident
  • Meeting the minimum eyesight standard
  • Not being disqualified from driving
  • Holding a licence that is due to expire or has recently lapsed

Following renewal, licences must be refreshed every three years to stay valid.

Swift online procedure

The DVLA confirms the online method is the quickest, with most motorists receiving their updated licence within a week.

To complete the application, drivers will generally require:

  • An email address
  • A history of addresses covering the previous three years
  • Their National Insurance number (if available)
  • A valid UK passport (if refreshing their photograph)

Motorists can also refresh their licence photo during the same process.

Important exceptions

Not all renewals can be completed online. Those wishing to renew entitlement for C1 vehicles (medium-sized vehicles); and D1 vehicles (minibuses) must apply by post instead.

Can you still drive while waiting?

Drivers can typically continue driving whilst their application is being processed – but only if strict conditions are met.

These include:

  • Having a valid previous licence
  • Meeting medical requirements, with a doctor’s support
  • Not being disqualified
  • Driving only under the same conditions as before

The application must also be less than a year old and not previously refused on medical grounds.

Why this matters

Failure to renew a licence after turning 70 means it is no longer valid – potentially leaving drivers uninsured and at risk of penalties.

With millions of older drivers on UK roads, the reminder is designed to ensure motorists stay legal and avoid unnecessary disruption.
