Passengers have been hit by travel chaos after a train appeared to be on fire in Scotland.
Shocking images captured smoke billowing from a carriage at Riverside Drive in Dundee on Friday. The thick smoke was pictured at around 11am. National Rail confirmed there had been an incident in Dundee and explained that a “fault” had been detected.
Train operators warned services between for Edinburgh to Aberdeen/Dundee and Glasgow Queen to Aberdeen all face “delays, alterations and cancellations”.
ScotRail said: “Due to an incident between Leuchars and Dundee, the line has been closed.” National Rail said: “A fault on a train between Dundee and Leuchars means that all lines are blocked. Trains running between Dundee and Kirkcaldy may be cancelled, delayed or revised.”
One passer-by said he witnessed smoke “coming out of the engine”. He told The Courier: “There was smoke coming out of the engine and the firefighters are hosing it down.
“It’s stopped on the line near the flats on Riverside Drive. I can’t see any passengers – maybe they have already been taken off the train. There are lots of firefighters and police parked in the layby.”
