Drivers may face £300 fine and 6 points – what you need to know – The Mirror

Need to know

The consequences can be far worse if you end up in court – even if it is a mistake

All you need to know as drivers warned over £300 fine for mistake:

  • Motorists could face a hefty fine and penalty points for driving without proper insurance. While some may deliberately risk taking out the wrong type to save money, and therefore are not fully covered, others fall foul through innocent oversight.
  • According to GOV.UK, it is “illegal to drive a vehicle on a road or in a public place without at least 3rd party insurance.
  • It adds that even if “the vehicle itself is insured, if you’re not correctly insured to drive it you could get penalised.”
  • Court cases can result in unlimited fines and driving bans, with GOV.UK warning the “police also have the power to seize, and in some cases, destroy the vehicle that’s being driven uninsured.”
  • Drivers must ensure they have a minimum third-party insurance coverage and report any changes to personal or vehicle details to the DVLA. The Government officials further warn that if you don’t meet your obligations, you could be taken to court or have to pay a fine.
