The government has issued a reminder about the identity documents needed for this process, some of which are specific to the elderly. Here’s a list of the documents you need

Senior drivers have been warned to ensure they possess the necessary paperwork for driving licence applications.

When motorists reach the age of 70, they must renew their licence, and the government has issued a gentle reminder about the ID documents required for this procedure. If you have a valid UK passport, simply jot down the 9-digit passport number on your application form. But if you’re without a passport, you’ll need to mail in an identity document to verify who you are.

Acceptable documents include: a current and valid foreign passport (not from an EU or EEA country) with a visa sticker or stamp (known as a ‘vignette’) indicating you have permission to live in the UK; a current and valid Irish passport (no visa sticker or stamp needed); or a travel document. Alternatively, you can use a UK birth, adoption or naturalisation certificate, but you’ll need to provide additional proof of identity with this, or evidence that you receive a state pension.

There are also some alternative options available. You can send a UK birth, adoption or naturalisation certificate along with a National Insurance card, or a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions or HM Revenue and Customs showing your National Insurance number. If you’ve misplaced your National Insurance number, you can find it here. Alternatively, you can submit a photocopy of the front page of a benefits book or an original benefits claim letter, reports Glasgow Live.

Alternatively, you can utilise a P45, P60 or pay slip, your marriage or civil partnership certificate, your divorce or end of civil partnership document (decree nisi, decree absolute, conditional order or final order), a gender recognition certificate or college or university union card, education certificate or PASS proof of age card (issued after June 2014).

If you’ve hit the State Pension age, you can submit an original of one of the following in your name: a recent (within 3 months) bank or building society statement showing your pension payment and National Insurance number or a BR2102, BR2103 or BR5899 letter confirming your eligibility for the State Pension.

It comes after a concerning number of untaxed vehicles where found to be driving on UK roads, with the latest figures estimating nearly 500,000 cars driving illegally on Britain’s roads. It’s a legal requirement for the person on the registration documents to ensure road tax is up to date. Those caught behind the wheel of an untaxed vehicle could face a hefty fine of up to £1,000. Earlier this year the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) urged those with cars and other vehicles “don’t forget” in a social media reminder.
