Motorists are only just working out a simple petrol station hack to allow you to set the price you are willing to pay before filling up your vehicle and stop overspending

Drivers have been left stunned after discovering a feature on petrol pumps around the UK that stops overspending.

Anyone who drives knows how frustrating it is when you go to a petrol station to fill up your vehicle and the metre tips over your spending limit. Aiming to put £20 in your car and seeing £20.01 on the pump screen is oh-so frustrating when you tried to nail exactly when to stop filling up your car.

But road users don’t have to juggle when to stop; there is a little-known button that can cap how much fuel goes into your vehicle. Once set, the pump will reportedly automatically stop filling petrol and diesel at a certain threshold. The system could save those who are paying cash and can’t go over budget.

TikTok user @ommelyla shared her revelation with her viewers and said: “Was it just me who didn’t know?” She added: “Do you know you can set the amount you want to spend when you’re filling your car with petrol?

“Before you even start you can set a limit of how much you want to spend and the pump will automatically turn off when you reach that amount. Like here when I only spent a tenner exactly.”

Instructions on the Tesco petrol pump in the clip said: “Before you loft the nozzle, tell the pump exactly how much you want to put in and it will stop for you. Press ’10’ and/or ‘1’ to set the amount example: press ’10’ twice for £20.

“Press ‘£/Lts’ for price or volume. Press ‘Pay at Kiosk’ or ‘Pay at Pump’. Remove nozzle and start to fuel. The pump will stop at your selected amount.”

At some stations, motorists can even determine how many litres of petrol or diesel they want. Commenting on the hack, one individual said: “As someone who works in a petrol station I hope this reaches the right audience because I’m so tired of the penny complaints when it’s so easy to fix.”

Another wrote: “Wait, you mean no more £20.01?” Another said: “Not all of them [have] it but they should! It’s a game changer.”

One other added: “I’m positive I’m literally the only person who has done this for years, every time I go to a petrol I never see anyone do this.” But some pointed out that they like trying to get the number spot on, on the metre.

One individual said: “Such tools are only for the weak. You must ascend such feats and reach 20 on your own skill to become a true master.”

One other added: “Takes the fun out! Need to have that thrill and risk.”
