‘The man in the front seat was in a really, really bad state,’ a passenger said, following a double-decker bus crash in Glasgow, after it smashed into a railway bridge
A passenger was left with blood gushing down his face after a double decker bus hit a railway bridge in Glasgow’s outskirts.
Footage posted online shows a First Bus wedged under the bridge on Cook Street. Police Scotland, who received a report of the crash at about 5:55pm on Saturday, said a number of roads in Glasgow have been closed.
Emergency services are at the scene and drivers have been asked to avoid the area. It is not known in which direction the vehicle was travelling but it is believed to have been on route 4A between Broomhill and Eaglesham.
Passenger Spike Turner, who was sitting near the front of the bus, told the BBC the driver had taken a wrong turn and crashed “straight into the bridge”. He said: “I was fine, the lady in front of me might have been concussed. The bridge itself wasn’t high enough to hit anyone’s heads but parts of the bus exterior have swung down. The man in the front seat was in a really, really bad state. He’s got a lot of blood and a massive gash on his head.”
A Police Scotland statement said: “A number of roads in Glasgow are closed following a report of a bus crashing into a bridge on Cook Street around 5.55pm on Saturday, 14 December. Cook Street is closed at Centre Street, Commerce Street is closed until Wallace Street and Salkeld Street is closed to Cook street. Emergency services are in attendance and drivers are asked to avoid the area.”
A neighbour told the Scottish Sun: “We were standing outside when we heard a loud bang. A couple of minutes the street was swarming with police and ambulances. We saw a guy come from the scene with a burst nose and cut lip.
“A police officer said that someone had been trapped in the top of the bus. Someone else said that an elderly lady was taken away in an ambulance.”
First Bus said one of its buses on the 4A route in Glasgow was “involved in a bridge strike incident” at about 6pm “in which a double decker bus hit a railway bridge” on Cook Street.
A spokesperson said: “We’re aware of numerous injuries, with one person being taken to hospital in an ambulance. We have launched an immediate investigation and are also assisting Police Scotland with their inquiries. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident.”
Local train routes were been impacted by the crash. In a social media post, ScotRail said: “Due to a road vehicle colliding with a bridge between Glasgow Central and Cardonald all lines are closed. Train services between Glasgow Central and Ardrossan Harbour, Ayr, Largs, Gourock, Wemyss Bay and Paisley Canal will be cancelled, delayed or revised.”
ScotRail has snce said all lines have reopened but “residual delays and cancellations will occur as crew and trains get back into their correct positions”.
