Spain are set to play against Argentina in the World Cup final at 8pm on Sunday evening, with Donald Trump picking who will win FIFA’s most prestigious tournament
Donald Trump has predicted that Argentina will win the 2026 World Cup final, with the US President saying “It’s hard to bet against [Lionel] Messi.” Trump will have the best seat in the house as the South Americans take on Spain at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday evening at 8pm.
Trump will also present the World Cup trophy to the winning team in the aftermath of the final. However, in the build-up to the match, Trump was probed by the American broadcaster FOX on who he believes will win – the European champions or the defending World Cup titleholders.
He reflected on Messi’s semi-final winning assist against England as he said: “I watched that pass…I guess you’d call it a pass…that was perfect.
“If you had a strike zone, it was exactly where it had to be. I watched also just before that, the way he got away from the defender.
“He was very well defended and then all of a sudden he was standing by himself…It’s hard to bet against Messi, he’s great.”
Trump also had a special request for Gianni Infantino, as he urged the FIFA president to return to the USA for the next instalment of world football’s most prestigious competition. He explained: “I had a great idea for Gianni.
“I said, ‘You have to do two countries – so announce us for next time, and then announce another country after that and it’ll take out some of the anger and the shock.’

“I said, to take out the shock, you could announce another country for the next one…but we have to do this again. You hear that, Gianni?”
Regardless of Trump’s suggestion, the 2030 World Cup is slated to be held across Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

It comes as Argentina will hope to defend the World Cup title they won in Qatar four years ago when the dust settles on Sunday evening. Lionel Scaloni’s men booked their place in the match as a result of a 2-1 win over England on Wednesday.
Luis de la Fuente, meanwhile, will look to put a pin in those plans. Spain made their own way to the final with a 2-0 demolishing of France on Tuesday and will hope to carry that world-beating form into Sunday’s game at the MetLife Stadium.
