Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in a fairly forgettable World Cup final after extra-time and were handed the coveted trophy by the President of the United States Donald Trump
Donald Trump gatecrashed another trophy presentation as the United States President decided to hang around for the start of the celebrations after Spain beat Argentina in the World Cup final.
The 80-year-old caused a stir last summer when Chelsea won the Fifa Club World Cup, which was held across the United States, by staying put after handing the gold over and was even seen bobbing along while Chelsea’s players celebrated their achievement.
Trump repeated the trick in New Jersey after handing Spain’s captain, Rodri, the coveted Jules Rimet trophy, albeit he didn’t stick around for quite as long this time around. He lingered on the edge of the platform for a few moments as Spain celebrated before being ushered along gently by a laughing Gianni Infantino.
It was confirmed last month that Trump would once again present the trophy to the winners of the tournament.
Infantino, Fifa’s president, was the one who confirmed Trump would do the honours for Sunday’s final. “That’s always been the plan,” he said.
“That’s how it’s always been done in the past – the president of the country where the final is held presents the trophy together with the FIFA president.”
Trump, who was booed by fans when shown on the big screen at MetLife Stadium, was in attendance for the World Cup final alongside Infantino.
Unfortunately, he and the tens of thousands of others in attendance were treated to a fairly drab final, which was mercifully ended in extra-time by Spain’s Ferran Torres.
The Barcelona struck in the 106th minute to give Spain a deserved breakthrough against the 10 men of Argentina, who saw Enzo Fernandez dismissed for a second yellow card in the final moments of regulation time.
