A popular practice that increases pleasure and duration when having sex or masturbating could at the same time be causing serious harm to your body warns a leading doctor

A doctor has warned that a popular sex act can actually cause harm by increasing chances of erectile dysfunction.

Edging is a practice where the point of reaching an orgasm is delayed and is used during masturbation as well as when having sex with a partner. It is a popular practice, where the climax is all but reached and then started again, because it may increase the pleasure and intensity of the orgasm when it happens. And as well as this it also means that the overall pleasure of having sex is prolonged which is especially useful for those who suffer from premature ejaculation.

Up until now it all sounds very positive but a doctor has raised the health issues that also come with this. Dr Donald Grant, a GP and senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy told how the practice can lead to erectile dysfunction. This is because by carrying out edging over a long period can make a man’s body less sensitive and so it is more difficult to reach an orgasm. At the same time there is also the risk of different injuries that can come from edging, pointed out the doctor.

“Our bodies quickly get used to our habits and this is no different when it comes to sex and masturbation,” he said, reported Joe.co.uk. “Through long-term use of the edging technique, our bodies may become desensitised to normal intercourse or masturbation techniques. This can have a lasting impact on men’s ability to maintain stimulation, making it more difficult to achieve or maintain an erection – a common sign of erectile dysfunction and may require treatment.”

As well as causing discomfort, the leading doctor also said that there is an increased chance of injury from edging and even ‘blue balls’ He continued: “Edging promotes long periods of sexual pleasure which can lead to overstimulation and enhance the likelihood of injuries. “Repeated masturbation for prolonged periods could irritate the genital area, cause friction or cause tears in the skin – particularly if products such as lube aren’t used.” He added: “It may also lead to testicular tension, also known as ‘blue balls’. To avoid this, limit edging sessions and always use products that help avoid friction.”
