A ‘quad-demic’ is spreading across the UK

A doctor has issued some urgent advice to people this winter amid the so-called ‘quad-demic’. This refers to the simultaneous circulation of flu, RSV, norovirus and Covid-19. In the past day alone, searches for “flu symptoms” have skyrocketed by a whopping 5000% with many people taking to social media to share their tips and tricks,

But one hack which has gone viral – with a dedicated 30 million posts – is being backed by health experts. Talking about all things fermented garlic honey, health experts at Landys Chemist have analysed the shift from over the counter medicines to homemade remedies this winter and have weighed in on the key benefits of garlic and honey to prevent cold and flu symptoms.

Fermented garlic honey is a natural health remedy made by infusing cloves of raw garlic in honey, allowing them to ferment together over time.

Rhysa Phommachanh, Health Specialist at Landys, explains why garlic and honey are winter health staples saying: “Both garlic and honey have proven benefits all year round, but can especially support our health in winter. Garlic is rich in prebiotic insulin fibre, which supports gut health and is believed to have antimicrobial and antiviral properties to fight disease and ease cold symptoms. According to clevelandclinic, a study involving 41,000 women between the ages of 55 and 69, found that those who routinely ate garlic, fruits and vegetables had a 35% lower colon cancer risk. The benefits don’t stop there as it is also good for your heart. The experts further reveal: “Research also indicates that garlic can have a positive impact on your arteries and blood pressure. Researchers believe red blood cells turn the sulfur in garlic into hydrogen sulfide gas.

“That expands our blood vessels, making it easier to regulate blood pressure. Before putting your blood pressure medication away, though, consult your doctor to see if adding more garlic to your diet could be beneficial for you.”
