There is a common mistake that people make with their dishwashers that could be reducing their efficiency.
Dishwashers are an incredibly convenient appliance that can take the hassle out of preparing meals. If you have a dishwasher at home, you’ve likely had the argument with your household at one point or another – to rinse or not to rinse?
It’s a fierce debate that rages across the country but experts at Bosch have now settled it once and for all. While rinsing was once essential, the need for it has faded as technology has advanced. Today’s machines use advanced sensors and targeted sprays to power through food residue effortlessly.
Koulla Henry, head of dishcare at Bosch, said: “One of the most common misconceptions we hear is that dishes need to be rinsed before they go into the dishwasher.
“Modern dishwashers are designed to detect and adapt to the level of soiling in each load, meaning all that’s typically needed is to scrape away larger food scraps before loading.”
Aside from unnecessary rinsing, there are a few other bad habits that Brits are guilty of when it comes to using their dishwasher.
These habits could, over time, reduce the efficacy of your appliance and could even contribute to higher energy bills, which no one wants.
If you use the same setting for every load of dishes you wash, you could be damaging your dishes. Always use the correct custom cycle depending on what you are washing.
If you ignore the eco setting, you’re making a mistake as well. Eco settings save money and time without compromising on the cleanliness of your dishes, so it’s a good idea to use them where possible.
The third mistake people make is overloading the dishwasher.
If you’ve cooked a big, intricate meal and used every pan in the kitchen, it can be tempting to just cram everything in – but this will lead to dirty dishes.
Crowded racks block the flow of water and detergent, so you’ll end up running extra cycles to get things clean. It’s better to space items out so that the water can hit every surface.
Bosch also recommends that anyone with a dishwasher make sure to keep up with the regular maintenance.
Over time, grease and limescale build-up will slow the performance of your appliance, so it’s important to keep up with the salt and rinse aid schedule to keep everything running smoothly.
