It turns out most people are causing their energy bills to skyrocket because they are using their dehumidifier wrong.

Dehumidifiers rank among the most valuable devices to own during winter, as they can dry clothes in half the time, preventing laundry from mounting up. Yet most people simply switch them on, aim them at the nearest clothes rack and leave them running longer than necessary, which ultimately inflates their energy bills.

The appliance specialists at Coopers of Stortford have revealed that you could be “quietly draining your wallet” by merely positioning a dehumidifier in the wrong spot. They explained: “A dehumidifier needs airflow to work effectively. Tucking it behind furniture, next to a wall, or in a corner severely limits its ability to pull moisture from the room. To give your dehumidifier the best chance of drawing in moisture, give it at least 20-30 cm of space on all sides.”

Dehumidifiers function by extracting water vapour from the air in a room and eliminating all that surplus moisture will enable laundry to dry considerably faster.

Nevertheless, dehumidifiers require access to all the air circulating in a room, and cannot eliminate any humidity if they’re obstructed by a wall or furniture.

Even if it proves slightly inconvenient, it’s more efficient to place a dehumidifier somewhere central where it has ample space surrounding it if you want it to function correctly, reports the Express.

You should also ensure doors remain open, even marginally, as dehumidifiers won’t work if there’s no air circulation in a room whatsoever. The specialist advised: “Keep the door slightly ajar to allow movement of moist air and avoid blocking vents or covering radiators, which can trap moisture.”

After relocating the dehumidifier to a more open space, switch it on during the morning hours if possible, as it performs most effectively at the start of the day.

Humidity levels typically peak in the morning because moisture accumulates whilst we breathe during sleep, and the lower temperature causes condensation to develop on windows.

Making the effort to run a dehumidifier first thing rapidly eliminates any overnight moisture, and could even help reduce energy costs if you’re on an off-peak electricity tariff.

Operating a dehumidifier properly represents one of the simplest methods to cut expenses throughout winter whilst simultaneously preventing damp and mould from developing in your property.
