The kind-hearted shopper had hoped to buy some discounted coats – but when she found out they were far more expensive than she thought, the shop stepped in and did something special
A kind-hearted shopper who planned on buying discounted coats to donate to a local homeless shelter saw her good-deed matched by the shop’s generous management team.
Posting on social media site under the alias WhichWayDoIWander, the anonymous shopper explained how they had seen two different prices on similar-looking jackets. They crossed their fingers the cheaper one would scan through, which unfortunately wasn’t the case, as the lower price was for a different style on clearance.
The Colorado based shopper was in luck, however, as an eagle-eyed Costco manager noticed the purchase and, upon realising it was intended as a gift for the homeless shelter, made sure to add a massive discount to the sale.
Sharing the heartwarming tale on Reddit, the customer said: “The manager at my Costco did something amazing today. I was purchasing winter coats to give away as gifts to a homeless shelter.
“There were two conflicting prices being advertised. I decided to fill my cart with coats hoping that they would ring up at the lower price, and unfortunately, they did not.
“The lower price was for a different coat that was on clearance. I mentioned I was buying the coats for a shelter and the Costco manager discounted the coats down to the clearance price of the other coat for me, which ended up being a 60% discount.
“I was able to purchase eight coats for the price of three. I wouldn’t have been able to afford eight at the higher price, so thanks to the wonderful folks at Costco, eight ladies will stay warm this Christmas season.”
The post has since exploded, racking up a whopping 28,000 upvotes and more than 3.2 million views.
Redditors were quick to heap praise on both the shopper and the store, with one writing: “Thank you Costco and thank you OP for your caring heart. A small gesture on both sides that’s going to mean a lot for those women.”
Another said: “As someone who’s been homeless stuff like this matters wayyyy more than any financial contribution you make to any charity… Thanks OP for keeping people warm till they can get on their feet.”
However, while wholesome, some on the site were quick to point out that it should fall on the authorities, and not the individual, to make sure people are warm and safe over winter.
One pointed out: “Costco is doing more for this country than the elected politicians.” And they definitely make a good point!
