A convicted murderer is on the run after failing to return from day release.
James Meehan is serving a life sentence at HMP Magilligan in Co Londonderry – but failed to return after being on day release, sparking a huge search by police. Officers have encouraged him to hand himself in.
Members of the public have been asked to get in touch if they have information which may help locate Meehan. A police spokeswoman said: “Police would also appeal directly to James to hand himself in.”
“We are appealing to anyone who has seen him, or who knows of his whereabouts, not to approach him directly but to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1251 09/12/24. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous.
