M&Co fell into administration for the second time in two years in December 2022 and closed all 170 of its UK stores in 2023 – however the retailer will now be making a comeback to the British high steet

Fashion retailer M&Co will be returning to the high street next week after closing all of its UK stores last year.

M&Co has announced that a brand new store will be opening in Newton Mearns in Scotland on May 3 – with more branches reportedly set to open in the coming months. The new site will be in the same location as the retailer’s old store which closed last year. The new store will initially create six jobs for the area and will feature a range of clothing in UK sizes 8-20, including the M&Co petite range. To celebrate its return, M&Co will offer exclusive discounts for customers who attend the opening, including a £5 voucher off a £25 spend for the first 50 customers.

M&Co fell into administration for the second time in two years in December 2022 blaming a “sharp rise” in costs and an “increased pressure on cash flows and trading losses” as the reason. At the time the retailer had around 170 shops in the UK and employed nearly 2,000 staff, and all its high street sites ended up closing by the end of April 2023. However, M&Co was saved when the brand and intellectual property were sold to Yours Clothing in February 2023.

Yours Clothing, which also owns the clothing lines BadRhino, Long Tall Sally, and Bump It Up Maternity, launched a new M&Co website in June last year and announced plans to open up physical stores once again. In June last year, the retailer shared that it planned to open 50 new M&C0 stores over the next two years.

Sandra McPherson, head of retail for M&Co stores, said: “We are thrilled to welcome back our loyal customers in-store. This expansion symbolises our commitment to bringing stores back to the high street and connecting with customers. I look forward to personally welcoming customers back on the opening day.”

Andrew Killingsworth, chief executive of M&Co, said: “The opening of our Newton Mearns store embodies our commitment to both the Scottish heritage of the brand and investment of our valued customers. We know how valued in-store shopping is, and we hope this store brings excitement for future store openings.”
