Washing machines drawers are the perfect places for mould to grow thanks to their warm, damp environment. Luckily, a 35p staple you probably already have in your kitchen can banish spores for good

Fans of cleaning ace Mrs Hinch are raving about a natural hack to banish mould in your washing machine.

Black mould can easily grow in our washing machine drawers, thanks to damp, warm conditions and a build-up of detergent. It seems pretty futile trying to wash your clothes in an appliance that needs cleaning itself, so getting rid of the unwanted fungi is imperative.

Luckily, there is an easy method to banish spores and restore your washing machine back to new without having to invest in expensive cleaners, which are often filled with chemicals. In fact, you probably already have this staple lying around in your kitchen…

One woman took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group to share that she needed some help when it came to cleaning her washing machine drawer, asking for people’s best tips, as it had only been a couple of washes since she’d given it a deep clean – and it looked gross. She wrote: “I cleaned this two weeks and I’ve done a few wash loads since and it’s looking like this!”, followed by a shrugging shoulders emoji. Can anyone help or suggest why this has happened?”

The comments were filled with people reassuring her that it was totally normal, offering their top tips for making sure it doesn’t come back again, explaining how to clean it if it does. One woman offered: “It’s normal it happens to everyone. After you wash open the drawer to let the air circulate. I also keep my door open so you don’t get the fusty smell too. Hope you get it sorted.”

Another recommended their top tip for banishing mould with a kitchen cupboard staple. They wrote: “Take it out and put it in the dishwasher. If not give a good scrub with a toothbrush. White vinegar sounds like a good idea. Might prevent this from happening again.”

Vinegar can be purchased from some supermarkets including Aldi and Tesco for as little as 35p. Someone also recommended cleaning after every wash to ensure the drawer can’t get mouldy. Others also said that leaving it open when not in use helped them to banish the mould, and stop it from coming back.
