Black mould is not only unsightly, but its spores can also cause a variety of health issues, including respiratory and lung problems. Here’s how you can eliminate it with a simple 70p trick

Black m ould is an utter nightmare to deal with. It plagues anything from walls to window sills, if it’s lucky to find an idyllic spot of damp.

But one cleaning guru has an anti-spore ‘hack’ that may save us all from tireless hours of scrubbing – and it often costs as little as 70p. Posting to TikTok, ‘Jess’ unveiled the unbelievable transformation of her mouldy bathroom seals, which appeared to be spotless once she’d finished with them.

“Guys I am shocked at this,” she said (@homeby.jess). “[In] one of my previous videos I asked for some help on how to remove the mould from the seals around my bath. And so many people commented saying to do this, so I thought I’d give it a try and I actually cannot believe how well it’s worked.”

Black mould is a type of fungus that thrives in warm, moist areas with poor ventilation. While it’s certainly an eyesore, the spores may cause a whole host of health issues too, including respiratory issues and lung problems.

As part of her hack, Jess first poured some bleach on the seals around her bathtub. These were then covered with cotton pads and another layer of bleach ‘just to let it soak in’. The TikToker left this to set for around seven hours and was astonished by the results.

“As someone who rents her house, I did not want to be forking out the money to replace these seals,” she said, before adding: “I will repeat this just to get rid of any bits I might have missed.”

Remarkably, Jess isn’t the only one to vouch for bleach as mould cleaner either. Experts at Cleanipedia also suggest making a spray out of bleach and water to kill mould spores, while also using kitchen staples like baking soda and white vinegar.

However, it’s worth noting that some bleach may cause ‘severe damage’ to sealant material. So, it’s perhaps wise to use it only when you desperately need to. You can buy bleach for as little as 70p from Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
