Need to know
Despite trends this month, there could be a white Christmas – or rather a white Christmas dusting – for some as they open their presents, according to the latest Met Office forecast
What you need to know about the Christmas Day weather forecast
- Christmas Day will be cold and windy but the sun will shine for millions
- Brisk winds will pick up from Christmas Eve, making slightly below-average temperatures feel close to freezing in much of the country
- Easterly winds affecting the UK’s south means Christmas Day and Boxing Day swimmers could face big waves
- Forecasters are not predicting a white Christmas but there is a small chance of snow falling in Dartmoor
- Temperatures are forecast to plummet below freezing overnight across much of the country, with northern Scotland potentially reaching minus 5C
- Clouds could accumulate in some southern counties on Boxing Day but elsewhere will remain largely dry sunny spells
- Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: “It’s a bit colder than average, not unusual for the time of year, but in terms of averages it would be a bit below.”
