A woman has died following a major explosion at a house.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Chippenham on Thursday afternoon following reports of an explosion.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics all attended the scene at Orchard Crescent in Chippenham on Thursday afternoon, March 5.

The residential street was cordoned off for public safety as emergency crews descended on the usually-quiet road at around 3.20pm this afternoon.

Following the explosion, Wiltshire Police confirmed that a woman had died.

The woman has been identified as being in her 40s with the force confirming that her next of kin has been informed. Her identity is not being made public at this stage, cops said.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We can confirm that a woman has sadly died following an incident at an address in Chippenham this afternoon.

“Along with the fire service and ambulance colleagues, we attended an address in Orchard Crescent at approximately 3.20pm today following a report of an explosion.”

“Sadly, a woman in her 40s died at the scene.

“The woman’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with her family at this time.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.”

A spokesperson for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service added: “We were called to Orchard Crescent, Chippenham at 3.18pm today (5 March) to support the ambulance service and police at an incident.

“Two crews from Chippenham attended and one remains on scene.”
