These old coins are highly sought-after by collectors
People have been urged to check their change for any old silver coins that combined could be worth a small fortune. According to an expert, these pieces could fetch more than £25,000 if in good condition.
Certain coins are worth far more than their face value if they are highly sought after by collectors. This can be due to its age, scarcity, or any unusual minting errors. Whatever the reason for their value, it can be highly lucrative to keep an eye out for certain pieces. In a video uploaded to social media platform TikTok, an expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard shared some highly valuable coins to spot.
Over-exaggerating, he said: “Old silver coins to make you a millionaire. You really need to save this and pay attention.”
All the coins mentioned in the video are no longer in circulation, but could still be found in attics or old coin jars. The first coin on his list was a two-shilling piece from 1851.
Also known as a florin, this coin has an extremely low mintage figure of “just 1,500”. He said: “This has an amazing value of £7,000 in top condition.”
Another rare coin he mentioned was the 1828 sixpence. He said: “There were only just over 15,000 of this coin ever made. And in top condition is worth £500.”
Then he shared details of the 1851 shilling. Around 470,000 of these were made, and it’s now worth about £700.
He continued: “1841 half crown next with a mintage of 42,000, with a top condition value of £5,000.” Then he showed an image of a 1905 half crown.
In top condition, this could sell for as much as £10,000. “With only 166,008 ever made, you can easily grab between £450 and £10,000, depending on the condition.”
Lastly, he referenced a fourpence groat from 1853. This had a “very low mintage” of 11,880. “The poorest condition can fetch £230 pound,” he said. “But can go up to £2, 000.”
