A British “drugs mule” who was allegedly caught with £1.2 million worth of cannabis at an airport in Sri Lanka has spoken of her dispair at facing years in a “hellhole” jail.
Charlotte May Lee, 21, insists she has been set up as she had “no idea” there were drugs in her luggage when she set off from Bangkok, Thailand, to Sri Lanka. However, she was arrested at Bandaranaike Airport there last week as it is said police discovered 46 kg of ‘Kush’ – a synthetic strain of cannabis – in her suitcase.
With the prospect of facing years locked up at the notorious Negombo Prison, Lee has today shared her side of the story, stressing the drugs were planted in her suitcase. The former flight attendant, from Coulsdon, south London, also claimed she has not eaten in two days because the food in the jail is “just too spicy”.
Her case mirrors that of Bella Culley, who must endure a roughly 55-day wait at Tblisi’s Women’s Prison No 5 in Georgia, where she too is suspected of drug smuggling.
In reference to Lee’s situation, a spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office told the Mirror: “We are supporting a British woman who has been arrested in Sri Lanka and are in contact with her family and the local authorities.”
