Emergency crews raced to the scene as families awoke to find a huge fire blazing on their street after a vehicle was set alight deliberately, cops said

Families on a quiet residential street awoke to find a massive care fire blazing after a vehicle was firebombed.

Emergency crews raced to the scene at Meiklerig Crescent in the Pollok area of Glasgow on Thursday night, January 29, at around 10.30pm.

The fire is being treated as deliberate, Police Scotland confirmed, adding that their enquiries are ongoing.

A bystander explained how children in neighbouring houses were asleep when the car was set on fire, the Daily Record reports.

They said: “The car went up in flames really quick and it was lucky it didn’t spread to the houses in the street.”

“There were children in their beds sleeping at the time so it could have had really serious consequences. Luckily the emergency services arrived pretty quick and the fire was extinguished but it isn’t the sort of thing you want to see happening in a quiet wee street.

“It looks like they threw a petrol bomb through the windscreen but the whole car eventually went up in flames.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.20pm on Wednesday, 28 January, 2026, officers received a report of a car on fire in the Meiklerig Crescent area of Glasgow.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. It is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.”
