A leading car mechanic has warned used car owners they must “replace” one of the most vital components on their vehicles if it starts to show signs of wear and tear

Leading motor expert has issued an urgent warning to drivers to “replace” a crucial component on used cars immediately.

Renowned mechanic Scotty Kilmer cautioned that motorists must fit fresh tyres the moment their tread begins wearing down. Tyre tread serves as a critical safety feature, with its grooved design making direct contact with the road surface.

The tread proves essential for delivering grip and traction, whilst also directing water away during wet weather conditions. As time passes, this tread deteriorates, becoming less efficient and potentially hazardous when driving in rain, reports the Express. In his latest video title, Scotty warned that road users must “replace” their tyres “now” upon spotting any tread deterioration.

During the footage, Scotty explained: “Today I’m going to talk about car tyres and rain. Now if you’ve ever noticed, drag cars have big wide tyres with all rubber, no tread, on the ground. All that rubber lets them accelerate fast.

“But a tyre with no tread and all rubber, when it rains, it’s useless and will slip like mad. Now your car’s tread may be running real thin. It will run fine when it’s dry but when it’s running it will slip all over the place.

“So every once in a while, look at your car’s tread, make sure there is still a lot of tread depth like this one.”

YouTube viewers rapidly flooded the comments section, encouraging others to act swiftly upon discovering any issues. Twitter user @Nick41622 warned: “When you see that your tyres are down to the wire, it’s time to replace them.”

@lionellover61 chimed in with: “Experience is the best teacher. Scotty really knows his stuff!”.

Meanwhile, @stolmich shared a handy tip: “We use a one euro coin, to measure the tread. If the outer ring is visible, then the tyres need to be replaced.”

The RAC has issued a stark warning to motorists, stating they could face fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each tyre that falls below the legal tread depth limit. This means drivers with four worn tyres could potentially lose their licence and be hit with a whopping £10,000 bill.

The RAC also revealed that this issue is a major cause of MOT failures in the UK.

They explained: “The legal tyre tread depth limit for cars in the UK and Europe is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. By law, the tread depth must meet this minimum requirement across its complete circumference.

“Bald tyres are one of the most common reasons for MOT fails, which is why it’s essential that you get into the habit of checking your car’s tyres regularly.”
