Other visual puzzles that have proved popular include the infamous #TheDress photo of 2015 which became a global sensation. It was created by a Tumblr blogger called Caitlin, who posted a snap of a layered lace dress and jacket worn by the mother of a bride at a wedding in Scotland that was causing a lot of confusion amongst her friends.

Online users couldn’t decide if the garment was blue and black or gold and white and before long celebrities were joining in, with Taylor Swift admitting she was “confused and scared”. The dress was actually blue and black and the image was a colour illusion, with the bluish tint of the image making the blue parts look white and the black parts look gold.

Experts explained people spending more hours in sunlight were more likely to see white and gold, with the debate over who was right and who was wrong raging on around the world. They also said the brains of those seeing white and gold had more activity in the parts dealing with decision making and attention to detail.
