Octopus Energy has announced that customers who are members of its “Octoplus” rewards scheme can claim a free croissant at Caffe Nero stores across the UK

Thousands of Brits can get their hands on some free croissants this weekend – but they’ll have to be quick.

Octopus Energy has announced that customers who are members of its “Octoplus” rewards scheme can claim a free croissant at Caffe Nero stores across the UK. However, with freebies like this, there is always a catch and for this, only the first 10,000 people can claim it. To get the freebie, all you need to do is activate the code on the Octopus app and show it to the barista serving you at your local Caffe Nero. Octopus customers can get the freebie from today until Sunday October 6.

The offer has been launched to celebrate Caffe Nero switching over 630 stores in the UK to Octopus Energy’s “Electric Match” tariff. The limited edition pastry perk is also in addition to the free weekly Caffe Nero drink promotion it has. This allows members to claim a free drink once a week at the coffee shop chain. So if you have yet to use your complimentary drink yet, you could treat yourself to a barista-made coffee and a flaky pastry this weekend.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product Officer at Octopus Energy, said: “Since April, our customers have enjoyed free weekly coffees at Caffè Nero. To celebrate Caffè Nero’s switch to 100% green electricity from Octopus, they can now also grab a croissant this weekend. We’re helping Caffè Nero save on energy bills while going green, and it’s brilliant to be able to reward our savvy customers too, with more exciting freebies to follow.”

What is the ‘Octoplus’ loyalty scheme?

Octoplus is a points-based loyalty scheme and it gives people the chance to earn “Octopoints” that can be redeemed for credit, converted into vouchers for entertainment and food or donated to charity.

Octoplus members can earn these points by doing certain things with Octopus Energy. The supplier says the activity that’ll earn you the most points is cutting your energy usage during its Saving Sessions which is the supplier’s version of the National Grid ESO’s Demand Flexibility Service (DFS).

During Saving Sessions, Octopus tracks your usage at half-hourly intervals and then compares it to your typical usage at that particular time of day. The more you cut your energy use back by, the more Octopoints you’ll receive. Octopus says you’ll earn an average of 800 to 1,000 points per session. The supplier says this is the equivalent of £1 to £1.25. Other ways members can earn Octopoints include:

  • Spinning the supplier’s Wheel of Fortune
  • Getting someone to switch to Octopus via its referral scheme
  • Switching to Octopus

Customers can use their Octopoints on a range of things including exclusive spins of the Octopus wheel of fortune, extra points for friend referrals, free weekly coffee from Greggs and Caffe Nero, discounted Odeon cinema tickets, and National Trust days out. Once you have earned the points, they are valid for three years.

Customers can also spend their Octopoints at the supplier’s online store called “Shoptopus”. Here you can buy t-shirts, socks and toys with your points, which will be worth double their face value. Octopus says any profit generated by the store will be paid into its customer support fund. To become an Octoplus member, customers will need to:

  • Have their electricity supplied by Octopus
  • Have an electricity smart meter (which sends half hourly readings)
  • Pay by direct debit
