They could be getting double the internet speed for almost a third of the cost

UK broadband customers could save £130 on their bills by making a simple switch, according to a recent survey. Broadband Genie’s study of nearly 4,000 Brits revealed that switching to local broadband providers could mean getting double the internet speed for almost a third of the cost.

The research showed that customers of alternative network (altnet) providers enjoy average speeds of 440Mb at just £28 per month. This is in stark contrast to the 227Mb at £39 per month offered by major nationwide providers – meaning consumers are pocketing over £130 on average when switching to these local providers.

That’s nearly double the speed (94% faster) for more than a quarter off the price (28% less), but millions of households still don’t realise these providers exist in their area – in fact, less than one in ten respondents (8%) said they were with a local broadband provider.

Peter Ames, of Broadband Genie, stated: “If you’re looking to switch broadband, local providers should be your first consideration if they are available in your area. The data speaks for itself: altnet customers get twice the speed for a significantly lower price, on average.”

The Broadband switching service claims customers say these smaller providers often outshine their larger rivals on key factors like customer service and flexibility. On top of that, most regional altnets steer clear of in-contract price hikes altogether.

In a stark contrast to the major broadband giants, who regularly impose mid-contract price hikes well above inflation, many national providers are now cutting prices in certain areas, giving you another reason to consider local for your broadband.

Alternative network providers (altnets) are now available to millions of homes across the UK. However, uptake remains limited, often because customers aren’t aware they have a choice or simply don’t recognise the names of these providers.

Broadband Genie has also announced the winners of its 2025 Regional Awards. These honours are given to altnet providers who offer exceptional value, fair pricing, robust customer service, and flexible options tailored to their local communities:
