Three rare 50p coins can earn you a lot of money if you manage to find them in your stash. A coin expert is now urging Brits to check their change immediately this January

You can earn yourself some extra money this January by checking your change. With rare coins being hot topic, it’s never been more important to do some digging to see if you’re sitting on a fortune.

Whether it’s a coin with a minting error or has fewer in circulation, there are many reasons your change can be worth more than face value. Now if you have a couple of 50p coins sitting in your change, make sure you check them properly as a little error could be just what collectors want and will pay a lot of cash for. Instagram user @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts over 36,000 followers, recently shared three 50p coins that “will make you thousands”.

He first discussed the 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p which is usually just worth face value, unless you own the rare rotation error version. The expert said: “The error Benjamin Bunny coin has the Queen’s head printed facing the wrong direction.

“When a coin is flipped over, the Queen’s head should be facing to the left but on a rotation error coin, this would be different. Around £30 you can get for this rare coin.”

Next he revealed the Aquatics 50p which was minted as part of a 29 coin collection released to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Games.

But it’s not just any Aquatics 50p coin you need to find, it’s specifically the one which features lines over the face. The expert added: “It could be worth a small fortune like £2,000.

“A small handful of this original design was put into circulation but it was then adapted very quickly to show the face above the water. With so few of the original design out there it’s meant the coin’s value has been pushed up significantly.”

And it’s not just the Aquatics coin from the London 2012 Olympic Games collection worth raving on about as he then turned his attention to the Athletics 50p.

Around 2.2million of these coins were minted and released into circulation in 2011, but an earlier version is the one you’re looking for if you want to make profit on your collection.

The expert concluded: “If you have this coin dated 2009, then you have found it and can sell for £250 plus.”

Three steps to follow if you find a rare coin:

Protect the coin: First of all, handle the coin with care. Never clean it as this can cause scratches which significantly reduces its value. Also place it in a protective holder.

Have it verified: Secondly, make sure to contact a professional who can have it validated for you. Make sure you can do your own research too.

Contact dealers: And finally, if you want to sell your coin to make a profit, visit reputable local coin shops or dealerships. You can even get opinions from multiple dealers before slapping a price tag on it.
