Brits have slammed M&S and cried ‘the world has gone mad’ after stumbling across an extortionate egg mayo and watercress sarnie – but the supermarket has clapped back

Brits have been left reeling after spotting a ‘posh’ egg may sarnie with an eye-watering price.

It’s no secret that food prices have spiralled in recent years, making everyday staples like bread, milk, and butter suddenly feel bank-breaking. Demand for food banks has also increased, and whilst grocery price inflation has fallen for the 14th month in a row, cash-strapped Brits are still struggling to put food on the table.

However, the wrath of inflation clearly hasn’t reached the wealthiest individuals in the country, who appear to be splashing out more than a fiver on a ‘posh’ version of the once humble egg mayo sandwich…

Viral account No Context Brits posted a photo of a M&S ‘Posh Egg Mayo and Watercress’ double sandwich, priced at £6, on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “This country is finished.” At the time of writing, the post has amassed a whopping 812,000 views and thousands of likes. Hundreds of disgruntled shoppers also flocked to the comments section to express their outrage.

“£6, what the f**k. That’s ridiculous,” fumed one user, according to Bristol Live. Another agreed, commenting: “£6 for an egg sandwich! The world has gone mad.” A third added: “£6 for two sandwiches, you could buy a loaf of bread, butter plus fillings of your choice for that and make many sandwiches.” While a fourth penned: “Add the word posh and you can charge what you like lol.”

In response to the sandwich outrage, an M&S spokesperson told The Mirror: “Our deep-filled Egg Mayo & Watercress sandwich in our M&S Café has over 150g filling which includes luxurious egg mayonnaise combined with salad cream and chives for a richer flavour. Paired with an extra layer of chunky slices of free-range egg, fresh baby watercress, and rocket leaves, the filling sits in between thick slices of soft 9-grain bread. This indulgent lunchtime option is proving to be a real customer favourite that can be enjoyed in our Cafés or on the go.”

The supermarket recently came under fire after shoppers stumbled across an item that has been in stores since 2018, but has also climbed in price. Taking to X, Jason Reid posted a photo of a tub of ‘Scraps’ – priced at £2.

The pieces of fried fish batter are usually free from the chippy, and are particularly popular in the north of England. What the actual f***? Rip off!” one person fumed. Another wrote: “At two quid for scraps, it seems they must be aimed at the middle classes.” While a third added: “£40 per kilo of BATTER. Christ.”

M&S told the Mirror its Chip Shops Scraps have ‘proved popular with customers up and down the country’ since debuting in 2018 – when an 80g pot cost £1.08. A spokesperson added: “Many enjoy as part of their chippy tea, and we know some customers enjoy sprinkling across a variety of meals.”
