The first wave of payouts for Brits who were affected by the car finance scandal is expected in June and many UK car owners still don’t realise they could be owed compensation
Brits who think they may have been impacted by the car finance scandal should check their agreements* sooner rather than later.
If you paid monthly for your car in the UK between April 2007 and November 2024, you likely had a PCP or Hire Purchase (HP) agreement. However, around 12.1 million car finance agreements are believed to have been affected by hidden commission mis-selling, with many drivers still unaware they may have paid more than they should.
A Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) redress scheme launched in March is expected to pay out an average of £829 per agreement. However, with the free scheme now facing four legal challenges in court, there is uncertainty over its future and when the first payouts will be implemented.
Brits who check their agreements and raise a complaint before June 30, 2026, are expected to be among the first wave of payouts. However, trying to dig out your lender paperwork can be a daunting task.
