Cleaning enthusiasts were left baffled after realising just much dirt and dust can gather in our radiators – especially when they’ve been turned off for the entire summer

You might want to give your radiator a clean after seeing all the gunk that might be trapped inside.

Hoovering the carpets, wiping the skirting boards, polishing cabinets and feather dusting the ceilings – these are all chores we do on a regular to keep our home dust-free. But, did you know that our radiators are one of the biggest culprits? Not only does a dust-infested radiator increase the risk of triggering your allergies – leaving you with nasty symptoms like eye irritation and respiratory issues – it also makes the appliance less efficient to run. This means you’ll be paying more for your energy bills without feeling the benefit. After a balmy summer with our heating off and windows open, it’s likely the radiators will need a good deep clean.

After Ofgem’s announcement the October energy price cap would increase to £1,717 from £1,568, making sure your home is energy efficient is more important than ever. Taking to TikTok, popular account The Clean Up Company showed the extent of just how much dust can gather in our radiators.

“If you’re wondering why you’ve got a lot of dust build up in your rooms, it’s probably cause your radiators need cleaning,” the cleaning ace said, horrifying viewers after clearing out huge amounts of dust and dirt. “Now look how satisfying this is. Look at the dust that is falling from between this radiator now – you wouldn’t even know it’s there.”

The cleaning expert used a flexible radiator brush, designed to reach into all the nooks and crannies without breaking or getting jammed. She then hoovered up all of the dust that hand landed on the carpet, and wiped the appliance down. Hundreds of mortified viewers rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many thanking The Clean Up Company for their advice. “I’m off to get a radiator brush and clean my radiators now,” one person said.

Another commented: “Finally, a sensible human cleaning radiator with a radiator brush. [I’ve] had mine for years.” A third added: “I use those brushes so mine are spotless lol,” while a fourth wrote: “Great job but how the heck does it get so bad?! All that dust!” You can pick up radiator brushers from your nearest general store or online. Amazon is currently selling a 120cm long version for just £9. Many viewers also suggested using a hairdryer to blast the dust out of the appliance, or investing in a steamer for a similar result.
