Instead of warm September sunshine, Brits have been shuddering through a cold snap recently. This has led many to put their heating on already to help keep them cosy
Despite it officially still being summer in the UK, Brits are certainly feeling the chill at the moment.
The autumnal equinox always happens in September, with the official end of summer occurring on September 22nd this year.
However, instead of warm September sunshine, Brits have been shuddering through a cold snap recently, as temperatures dived below freezing in multiple parts of the UK this week.
A blast of Arctic air hitting the UK resulted in colder than usual conditions for mid-September. The village of Topcliffe in North Yorkshire recorded a chilly -2.7C, while Eskdalemuir in central Scotland also saw the mercury plunge to -2.5C on Thursday (September 12 night).
This means some Brits have already been forced to put their heating on, with making taking to social media to express their shock that it’s so cold this September.
One person exclaimed: “Insane how I need the central heating on in September.” While another agreed: “It is SEPTEMBER and my house is 15.5 degrees!!! Might be the earliest I’ve ever stuck the heating on.”
Another person asked: “Why am I currently considering putting my heating on IN SEPTEMBER.”
Someone else also went viral online as they asked: “Has anybody else reached to turn the heating on yet?!” Numerous people admitted they had, as simple replied: “Yes, house has to be warm and an even temperature 24/7 for my health.” While others admitted they had put it on for ‘an hour or so’.
Despite some people giving in to the cold snap, others were adamant their heating wouldn’t be going on until at least October. One person wrote: “I’m willing to put on a third cardigan this morning. Under no circumstances is the heating going on.”
Another added: “I’m not giving in. The heating is not going on.” While a third agreed: “NO. It’s September FFS. Socks & jumpers. Weather’s warming up next week.” While someone else said they never put their heating on until October half term.
The NHS advises that people should put their heating on when temperatures outside drop below 15C for health reasons. This is usually around October 20th, as from this date, temperatures aren’t expected to rise above 15C for the rest of the year.
If you were considering putting your heating on this weekend, you may want to hold out as it’s predicted Brits should enjoy warm 20C weather this weekend.
Daytime highs of 20C are likely in the south on Saturday and Sunday and 17C in the far north, in a move towards more typical early autumn weather. Warmer conditions will also reportedly follow into next week thanks to a replacement of the Arctic air with a new high pressure front, with temperature highs of 24C in some places.
Met Office forecasters also say more settled conditions are likely, though occasional showers are still possible in the north.
