Emily Casey, 34, was rushed to hospital just three days into the family’s Gran Canaria holiday after she started struggling to breathe – and her husband had no idea she had slipped into a coma
The relatives of a British mum-of-five who lies in a coma in Gran Canaria are battling to bring her home.
Emily Casey, 34, fell seriously ill while holidaying in the Canary Islands with her husband Jamie Casey and their five children. On Wednesday, May 13, just three days after the family, from Wirral, jetted to the island, Emily began experiencing breathing difficulties and was immediately rushed to a local hospital.
She’d recently bounced back from pneumonia so medics initially believed she might have a blood clot in her lung. Jamie was requested to pay £3,000 upfront for a CT scan on his wife.
Emily’s father John transferred the funds and the scan was carried out. They were informed the pneumonia had come back and one of her lungs was “full of fluid,” which required draining.

Jamie headed back to the family’s hotel to care for their five children that evening. Throughout the night he rang and texted Emily repeatedly to ensure she was alright while their children slept, but received no reply.
The following morning Jamie raced back to the hospital, where he discovered his wife was in an induced coma on a life support machine. In a state of panic, Jamie contacted their relatives back in the UK and Emily’s mum jetted to Gran Canaria to assist in caring for her.
When their holiday finished on Tuesday, May 19, Jamie returned to Liverpool with their children to sort out childcare arrangements, reports the Liverpool Echo.
He has subsequently flown back to Gran Canaria to remain at his wife’s bedside. Upon his return, he was informed that his wife had developed sepsis. On May 23, the family received the devastating news that Emily’s progress had “gone backwards”. Scans showed that pneumonia had “taken over her lungs again” and sepsis is now in her bloodstream.
The family have been faced with hospital bills exceeding £8,000; however, because the mum-of-five had recently recovered from pneumonia, her insurance provider has refused to cover the costs. The family are now “desperately” appealing for assistance to get Emily back home to the UK.
