Young Brit Charlotte May Lee – who has been accused of smuggling over 46kg of super-strength synthetic cannabis – appeared at a Sri Lankan court today
A 21-year-old British woman who was allegedly caught with over 46kg of cannabis has appeared at a Sri Lankan court today.
Charlotte May Lee, from South London, was arrested last week after £1.2million worth of super-strength of the synthetic cannabis Kush was allegedly found in her suitcase. The former TUI air stewardess was escorted by several police officers into court today. The young Brit faces a grim sentence of up to 25 years behind bars if she is found guilty, but she has claimed that she was set up. Charlotte was arrested at an airport after landing in Sri Lanka from Bangkok, Thailand, last week.
The 21-year-old was teary when she entered the back of a packed courtroom, was held in a cell, and briefly moved to the witness box. Police dramatically wheeled in the nearly 50kg of cannabis they accused the young Brit of holding in her suitcase.
Charlotte is expected to appear again in court in two weeks. The 21-year-old has claimed she was set up by a British man of Pakistani origin who she only knows by the first name Dan.
She claimed he bought the plane ticket for her and gave her a suitcase which he packed. The 21-year-old also claimed he gave her money to cover excess baggage fees and he told her that one of the bags had clothing inside.
‘Dan’ is also supposed to have told her that Sir Lanka was a “lovely place for a holiday” and that they would have a “wonderful time” but he had to first remain in Bangkok to see a friend, before joining her.
The Brit spoke from behind bars, to the MailOnline, claiming she had “no idea” there were drugs in the suitcase and that they had been “planted”. She said: “I had never seen them before. I didn’t expect it all when they pulled me over at the airport. I thought it was going to be filled with all my stuff.
“I had been in Bangkok the night before and had already packed my clothes because my flight was really early. So I left my bags in the hotel room and headed for the night out.
“As they were already packed I didn’t check them again in the morning. They must have planted it then.” It is also claimed Charlotte said she had never visited Sri Lanka before but police believe she came in January.
