The British man, 33, was diving at Epanomi Shipwreck attraction in Thessaloniki, when they got into trouble in rough seas over the weekend, it was reported

A Brit has drowned while diving at a shipwreck off the coast of Greece in rough seas.

The man is said to have got into difficulty while swimming at the Epanomi Shipwreck, a popular attraction in Thessaloniki. Local reports say other concerned swimmers raised the alarm over the weekend amid rough weather.

The 1st Port Department of Michaniona Prefecture of the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki was informed, as a vehicle was sent to their rescue. Efforts by ambulance crews to save his life were unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the scene.

The man was taken to the Hippocrates Hospital. An autopsy was ordered by the Port Authority which is conducting an investigation.

The Epanomi shipwreck, located in Northern Greece, is visited by both locals and tourists who dive in the crystal clear blue-green waters. The ship sank in winter 1970 when it was transporting soil and now is one of the most popular diving locations in the country.

The Foreign Office has been approached for comment by the Mirror.
