From today (October 1), the energy price cap is set to increase by an average of 10% until December 31. It’s the perfect time to grab one of B&Q’s house-warming items
If you’re worried about rocketing energy bills, you’re certainly not alone. From today (October 1), the energy price cap is set to increase by an average of 10% until December 31.
Typical households paying by Direct Debit and using electricity and gas may even see bills go up to a staggering ‘£1,717 per year’. But don’t panic. There are a few things you can do that may lessen the blow.
Remarkably, this may include purchasing a rather surprising item from B&Q. Sellers claim its use can slash home heat loss by ‘up to 50%’, which may allow you to knock back your energy use in the long-run.
The tool in question is actually ‘Diall Radiator reflector’ foil, which costs a mere £14.97. Made of aluminium, this 5m² reflective sheet may be cut in size to fit on and behind your radiator. It’s designed to reflect warmth back towards the centre of a room, while avoiding heat loss through poorly insulated walls.
“Cut the product to size (using scissors or cutter), taking account for the incisions for the radiator brackets.” B&Q sellers explain. “Apply adhesive on the polystyrene side. Slip the product behind the radiator and press on carefully.”
Importantly, the product will only withstand a maximum temperature of 60°C, but it has received an overall public approval rating of 4.2/5 stars and an official Green star claim. However, if you’re not so keen on the Diall Radiator reflector foil, there are plenty of alternatives available online.
Screwfix has a 195mm x 500mm roll of insulating foil available for just £9.99, while The Range has a variation available for £23.99. Meanwhile, Dunelm is also offering electric blankets for just £17.
The sheet, made from a thick, ‘soft to touch’ material, boasts a powerful 35W output and a three-heat setting remote. So, customers have the option to select whatever temperature works best for a dreamy night’s sleep.
For those worried about overheating, it also switches off automatically after a certain period of time, meaning it’s completely safe to operate during the day and night. Sellers add: “The blanket is efficiently designed to allow consistent warmth as you sleep.
“For a quick and easy clean, simply detach the temperature controller and pop the blanket into the washing machine.”
