Superfood ingredients

“The lines between beauty and wellness certainly blurred this year, as we saw more product trends that spanned holistically across skincare, haircare, wellness and health,” says Grace Vernon, Head of Global Trends and Cultural Insights at Boots and No7 Beauty Company. 2024 saw people swapping their morning coffee for mushroom tea, stock up on beauty supplements, and look to K-beauty brands featuring ingredients such as green tea and probiotics.

Magnesium

Arguably the most popular mineral of 2024, the hashtag #magnesium trended on TikTok this year, with influencers and shoppers alike praising its benefits for joints and muscles as well as sleep quality and energy levels.

BUY:Boots Magnesium 375mg 60 Tablets, £6.50, was popular with Boots shoppers, while our beauty and wellness editor Laura Mulley swears by INNOPURE Magnesium Glycinate 90 Capsules, currently £11.69, for a more restful night’s sleep.

Blushes and balms

Perhaps partly thanks to the phenomena that is Sabrina Carpenter and her cherubic look, blusher was the must-have make-up product of the year, with searches for ‘blush’ on boots.com increasing by 155%. Viral blush trends included ‘sunset blush’, ‘boyfriend blush’ and ‘crying blush’.

Boots also saw a rise in shoppers looking for lip balms (+38%), with more choices of this handbag essential now on the shelves than ever before, with something for every budget – including Boots’ own £2.50 Glossy Lip Balm, which sold one every 30 seconds when it launched.

Hydration

Hydrating your skin more is one of the easiest ways to improve its quality, and trends such as ‘skin flooding’ and ‘slugging’ were popular this year. Hyaluronic acid is one of the best ingredients for this, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune, either.

BUY: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 30ml Serum, currently £7.48, was a Boots bestseller.

Skin longevity

‘Longevity’ is a popular word in lots of different wellness factions at the moment, including skincare, with shoppers looking to future-proof their skin and prevent – or even reverse – damage. No7 Future Renew Day Cream SPF40, £34.95, was the brand’s best-selling product of the year – and it currently has 20% off.

Another habit that may help to keep you skin looking better for longer is regularly taking collagen supplements, ‘banking’ your skin’s collagen reserves for the future.

BUY:Vida Glow’s Natural Marine Collagen Sachets, £39, are a popular choice with many a beauty editor, while our tester also loved Gold Collagen Pure Liquid Supplements, from £39.

Honing in on haircare

‘Shampoo’ was the biggest search term on boots.com this year – perhaps unsurprisingly, given that it’s a beauty essential – but scalp serums were popular too, led by Rita Ora’s new scalp-focused haircare brand TYPEBEA launching in store, with impressive results.

BUY: OUAI Detox Shampoo, £28, REDKEN Acidic Bonding Concentrate Shampoo, currently £21.84, and REDKEN All Soft Shampoo for Dry Hair with Argan Oil, currently £18.49, were some of the most bought shampoos this year.
